I Forgot My Wallet Password

A wallet password and a recovery phrase are different things. How to tell which one you have lost, and what can be recovered.

Written by Johnny

A wallet password and a recovery phrase are not the same thing. Which one you have decides whether this is a two minute fix or a permanent loss.

Which One Have You Forgotten?

Your wallet app password is the local unlock for Phantom, Solflare, or Backpack on that one device. It is not your key and it never leaves the device. Forgetting it is recoverable.

Your recovery phrase is the 12 or 24 words that control the wallet itself. It is the key. Without it, nobody can restore access, including Marinade.

If You Use a Hardware Wallet

If your SOL is on a Ledger, Keystone, or Trezor, the wallet app is only a connector. Your key is on the device, and the device has its own recovery phrase. Forgetting the app password changes nothing.

  1. Install Solflare or Backpack as a browser extension.

  2. Choose Import existing wallet, not Get Started. Get Started creates a brand new empty wallet.

  3. Follow your device maker's guide for connecting it to that wallet.

  4. Pick the account that holds your balance, then set a password and write it down this time.

  5. Open app.marinade.finance, disconnect the old wallet from the top right, and connect again choosing the new one.

Leave your original wallet app installed. You are adding a second way in, not replacing anything, in case the password comes back to you.

If You Have Your Recovery Phrase

Import the phrase into Phantom, Solflare, or Backpack. The same accounts and balances appear. Set a new password during setup.

Never type your recovery phrase into a website, and never send it to anyone, including anyone claiming to be Marinade support.

If You Have Neither

If it is a software wallet and the recovery phrase is gone, access cannot be restored. Your SOL is still in stake accounts owned by your address and no one else can move it, but no one can move it for you either. Marinade holds no key and has no reset.

Before concluding this, check every place a phrase gets written down: a password manager, a paper backup, a safe, a photo, or a phrase you saved during setup and forgot about.

Confirm Your Stake Is Still There

Open Jupiter Portfolio at portfolio.jup.ag and enter your wallet address. It shows your staked positions without needing you to connect or sign anything.

If that does not load, use Solscan as a backup: https://solscan.io/account/YOUR_ADDRESS#stakeAccounts lists your stake accounts and balances directly.

Nothing about a forgotten password moves them.

FAQ

Q: Can Marinade reset my wallet password?
A: No. Marinade never holds your key or your password. There is nothing on our side to reset, and any reset we could perform would be a security hole.

Q: Does importing into another wallet reset or wipe my Ledger?
A: No. Importing is read-and-connect. It does not change the device or the accounts on it.

Q: I set up the new wallet and my staked SOL is not showing.
A: Scroll down on the positions page, and confirm the address in the top right matches the one holding your stake. If it does not, switch accounts in the wallet and reconnect.

Q: Someone offered to recover my wallet for a fee. Should I?
A: No. Every one of these is a scam. There is no technical way to recover a wallet without the recovery phrase, so anyone claiming otherwise wants your phrase or your money.
