Staking Rewards and Taxes

Where to get records of your staking rewards, which products the rewards report covers, and why you should still speak to an accountant.

Written by Johnny

Marinade does not provide tax advice and does not issue tax forms. Tax treatment of staking rewards varies by country and by your personal situation. We strongly advise speaking to a local accountant or tax professional about what you need to report and how.

What we can help with is records: where to find what your position earned, and when.

Marinade Native With SOL Rewards

If you stake with Marinade Native and receive your rewards in SOL, rewards are credited into your stake accounts at the end of each epoch.

For these positions we offer a Staking Rewards Report, which lists rewards epoch by epoch and can be exported. Existing Marinade Select positions are also covered.

The Report Does Not Cover Marinade Recipes

This catches people out, so it is worth being clear about.

The Staking Rewards Report covers SOL-denominated rewards only. If you chose a Recipe reward token such as USDG, USDC, or cbBTC, those payouts will not appear in the report. They are airdropped to your wallet each epoch as token transfers, so your records come from your wallet's transaction history or a Solana explorer such as Solscan.

mSOL Works Differently Again

With Marinade Liquid (mSOL) there are no periodic reward payments to record. Your mSOL balance does not change; its value against SOL rises as rewards accrue in the exchange rate.

That means there is nothing arriving epoch by epoch, and your records come from when you acquired and disposed of mSOL rather than from a stream of reward events. How that is treated where you live is exactly the sort of question to put to an accountant.

What the Report Is, and Is Not

The Staking Rewards Report is a convenience feature we built to make your own record-keeping easier. It is not a tax document.

  • It is provided for informational purposes only.

  • It is not intended for legal, accounting, or tax filing purposes, and it is not a substitute for professional advice.

  • We cannot promise it is complete or accurate for your tax reporting, and Marinade is not responsible for outcomes that follow from using it.

  • You are responsible for what you report to your tax authority.

It also does not include everything you might want:

  • Stake size per epoch

  • Validator performance details

  • Recipe reward token payouts, as above

Treat it as a starting point, and check it against your own on-chain history before relying on it.

FAQ

Q: Does Marinade issue tax forms such as a 1099?
A: No. Marinade is non-custodial and does not issue tax forms of any kind.

Q: Can support tell me whether my rewards are taxable?
A: No. We cannot advise on tax treatment, in any jurisdiction. Please ask a qualified professional.

Q: My stake is still active. Do I have records already?
A: Yes. Rewards are credited each epoch while the position is active, so there is a history to look at whether or not you have unstaked.

Q: Can I get the report in a format my tax software accepts?
A: You can export as CSV, PDF, or XLSX. Whether a given tool accepts it, and how it should be mapped, is between you and that tool.
